China's top advisory body concluded its annual
session on Monday morning with the adoption of a political
resolution that calls on the nation to firmly oppose "Taiwan
independence" secessionist forces and activities.
The Fourth Session of the 10th National Committee of the Chinese
People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), attended by
more than 2,000 advisors from across the country, was convened on
March 3.
"We invite all descendants of the Chinese nation who love the
motherland to resolutely oppose 'Taiwan independence' secessionist
forces and activities, and contribute to the development of
cross-Straits relations and the reunification of our motherland,"
the resolution reads.
Taiwan authorities fueled the issue of "Taiwan independence"
again this year when it abolished the "National Unification
Council" and the application of the "National Unification
Guidelines". This raised strong opposition from both sides of the
Straits.
The resolution describes this move as a dangerous step that
undermines cross-Straits relations.
"Our determination to safeguard our country's sovereignty and
territorial integrity is unshakable."
The CPPCC also hailed the "socialist concept of honor and
disgrace" highlighted by President Hu
Jintao, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China
Central Committee, during a panel discussion with the country's
political advisors during the session.
The resolution states that it is imperative to promote the
concept and make it part of the country's social norms.
The concept stresses the value of patriotism, hard work and
plain living, belief in science, consciousness of serving the
people, solidarity, honesty and credibility, and observation of the
law. The CPPCC describes it as the perfect combination of
traditional Chinese and modern values.
Hu and other Chinese leaders including Wu
Bangguo, Wen
Jiabao, Zeng
Qinghong, Wu
Guanzheng, Li
Changchun and Luo Gan
were present at the closing meeting of the session that was
presided over by Jia
Qinglin, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee.
Jia urged CPPCC committees and members at all levels to remain
steadfast to their "sacred historical mission".
"It is our major task to help promote the development of our
country," Jia said.
He urged CPPCC members to help the Party and government maintain
social stability and contribute to the building of a harmonious
society by keeping close ties with the masses, to be concerned with
their interests, and reflect their opinions.
The CPPCC is a patriotic united front that represents the
Chinese people, and serves as a key mechanism for multi-party
cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the
Communist Party of China. It is also a significant manifestation of
socialist democracy.
The main functions of the CPPCC are to conduct political
consultation, exercise democratic supervision and participate in
the discussion and the handling of state affairs. Its role in
political consultation involves the deliberation of key principles
and policies proposed by the central and local governments and
matters of importance surrounding political, economic, cultural and
social affairs.
5,030 proposals were submitted to this year's CPPCC National
Committee session, among which more than 2,200, or 45 percent,
relate to economic growth.
About 4,900 proposals, or 97 percent of the total number, were
noted and recorded after examination.
