Da Gui 大贵

Decked out in minimalist decor, this Guizhou joint specializes in dry pots, sour soup fish, cured meats and glutinous rice dishes. A must try is their stir-fried yuan xiao.

Behind its blink-and-you'll-miss-it storefront, Da Gui specializes in Guizhou's dry pot, cured meat (la rou) and glutinous rice dishes. The minimalist design lends a casual feel to the dining experience, while must-try dishes include glutinous rice dumplings (yuan xiao, RMB 28), which are stir-fried with pickled vegetables in a piquant sauce. We were also impressed by the cured meat (RMB 32), which is air-dried (just as it is back in Guizhou) then stir-fried with glutinous sticky rice cubes. Don’t leave without trying their dry pots – various ingredients cooked in spicy oil inside an iron pot (RMB 39-58). The sticky sweet rice cake (RMB 12) made of black rice was shaped like a coal block placed on top of a fixture that resembled an old stove. Sadly, the presentation was better than the taste. While the food was generally good, the service was a little slow; but the restaurant has only just opened, so we’ll give it the benefit of the doubt and will probably pay a second visit.
