The shortest hutong of all: Yichi Dajie (Yichi Street)

The alley is located in Xicheng District, Beijing and adjacent to Liulichang, a famous art and antique street. It runs along for about 20 meters, generally considered to be the shortest of all the hutongs in Beijing. Now it has been merged into Yangmeizhu Xiejie (Skewed Poplar Plum Bamboo Street).

The oldest hutong: Sanmiao Jie (Third Temple Street)

Located in Xuanwu District, Beijing, this hutong dates back to the Liao Dynasty (916 to 1125 AD). With more than 900 years of history, it is considered to be the earliest hutong. It was named after a Guandi Temple, a shrine dedicated to Guan Yu who lived during the Three Kingdoms era (220 to 280 AD). However, the temple was destroyed in the 1940s.

The most zigzag hutong: Jiuwan Hutong (Nine-turn Alley)

In fact, this hutong situated in Xuanwu District, Beijing, has more turns than its name suggests. People say that the 400-meter-long hutong has no less than 13 turns. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that some people claim to have felt at a complete loss while snaking along the alley.
