Mao'er Hutong is an east-west running alley in Dongcheng District, Beijing and connects the famous Nanluoguxiang and Di'anmenwai Street. The 600-meter-long hutong was given its name during the Qing Dynasty (1644 to 1911 AD) because there were several hat-making workshops in the neighborhood. But what gives the hutong great fame is its cultural and historical significance. The Keyuan Garden, a well-preserved private garden, is located in this neighborhood. A number of historical figures like Feng Guozhang, a key Beiyang Army general and Empress Wanrong, wife to China's last Emperor Puyi, used to reside here. Their former residential compounds have been very well protected by the government.
