The American telecommunications corporation Motorola Inc. started its business in China back in 1987 when it opened its first facility in Beijing as a representative office to test the Chinese market. In 1992, Motorola (China) Electronics Ltd. was registered in Tianjin. Two years later, the company purchased a high-tech modern office building in Beijing to house its greater China headquarters, which opened in 2007. The building is also home to a huge R&D center.
The company's business operations in China cover mobile phones, wireless devices and auto electronics, among many others. Although its sales are seriously challenged by fierce local competition, it remains a major player in the Chinese market.
