The quality of Chinese TV series has improved as sales hit record high last year but output decreased, a report released Tuesday has found.

Figures show that in 2009, the country produced 402 TV dramas, 100 less than that in 2008 - the first decrease in the past five years, according to the 2010 Report on the Development of China's Radio, Film and Television compiled by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT).

However, sales of these dramas totaled 2.1 billion yuan (US$307.5 million), up 31.25 percent year on year - also the highest increase since 2005, said the report.

"The TV drama market has entered a new period of quality-oriented rather than focusing on the output," said Pang Jingjun, a senior official with the SARFT and also the chief writer of the report.

Pang said a number of sophisticated dramas of high artistic quality emerged in 2009, citing a smash TV series "Lurk" ("Qian Fu").

While raking in multiple audience awards, the drama also won the top TV Series Golden Award at the 15th Shanghai International TV Festival last year along with Best Script and Best Actor.
