Distributors have postponed releasing their films until August, in a bid to avoid competing with the success of Aftershock, according to a report in Beijing News last Thursday.

This means that a total 27 movies - including Shrek Forever After - will be released this month.

Aftershock, directed by Feng Xiaogang, earned more than 200 million yuan ($29 million) in just a week following its release.

Distributors are also aiming to target audience includi students on their summer break – which is another reason they have put off the release of their films.

An employee at the Capital Times Cinema told the Global Times that the venue will screen 20 new movies in August, among which 4 movies will be released on August 13. And he added that most of them are either action films or romantic comedies.

Shrek Forever After and Into the Deep are both 3D films.

Also coming to Chinese screens soon is Les aventures extraordinaires d'Adèle Blanc-Sec, which combines action and fantasy and uses a lot of computer generated effects special effects. Its director, Luc Besson, said it is the largest commercial movie ever produced in France.

Hong Kong director Chan, Muk-Sing's City Under Siege is another action movie with a science fiction element, and it has been called a Chinese version of Superman. Chan invited dozens of special effect experts from the United States to work on the special effects.

"Almost all the movies have the theme of love. Whether it's the 3D movie Shrek Forever After or the action movie City Under Siege, love is their indispensable ingredient," said the Capital Times Cinema employee.

Love in Disguise is the first movie directed by and starring Taiwan singer Wang Lee Hom, and Close to You, is also from Taiwan.

High School Musical, from the US, The Stool Pigeon, a crime and gangster movie, and Germany's The Charlemagne Code, are some of the other movies set to be released in China this month.
