Award winning director Wang Quan'an commenced filming of his new drama "White Deer Plain" on Thursday in Beijing, M1905.com reports.
"White Deer Plain" is anticipated to be a difficult shoot due to the complicated storyline and numerous characters. Other Chinese directors like Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige have attempted to take on the project and failed.
Wang attended a ceremony honoring the start of filming with the entire cast.
"White Deer Plain" is adapted from the 1993 novel written by Chen Zhongshi of the same name. Set in northwestern China's Bai Lu Yuan plain, the generational saga depicts the radical changes which took place in the region over half a century. The novel won China's esteemed Mao Dun Literature Prize in 1997.
Wang said the film version will not include the sex scenes for which the original is known.
"'White Deer Plain' is a film relevant to nationalist spirit, it's not a 'Lust, Caution' kind of film," said Wang, referring to the 2007 blockbuster featuring Tony Leung and Tang Wei engaged in a number of risqué sex scenes.
Li Meng, a freshman from the Beijing Film Academy was picked from more than 3,000 art school students to play the lead. According to the producer, they picked Li for her beautiful and innocent eyes. She has been compared to Jing Qiu, the female lead in Zhang Yimou's romance "Under the Hawthorn Tree," which premiers on September 16.
"White Deer Plain" will be released in China in February 2011.
