Zhou Dongyu, the first-time actress who achieved instant fame with Zhang Yimou's drama "Under the Hawthorn Tree" ("Shan Zha Shu Zhi Lian"), will portray Mao Zedong's wife in her second film, the Xiaoxiang Morning Herald reports.
"Xiangjiang Bei Qu" ("The Northward Xiangjiang River") will center on the stories of young Mao Zedong.
Eighteen-year-old Zhou was chosen for the role of Yang Kaihui thanks to her portrayal of an innocent young woman in "Hawthorn Tree", the report said.
Actor Bao Jianfeng, who is better recognized on small screens, will play Mao Zedong.
Filming is slated to begin on November 11 under the helm of director Chen Li. The film's release date is scheduled for May 2011.
Zhou Dongyu was in her senior year of high school when she was cast as the lead actress for Zhang Yimou's film, which was released this summer. The director's prominence soon catapulted Zhou and the film's male lead, Shawn Dou, into the limelight.
Dou has also received a new film contract. Previous reports said he would play Qu Qiubai (1899-1935), one of the earliest leaders of the Communist Party of China, in a biopic to be directed by Huo Jianqi.
