The 2011 Tribeca Film Festival ( TFF), one of the largest in the United States, unveiled on Monday the first half of its lineup for the 10th annual event.
A total of 44 films of the 88 feature-length films were announced, which will be shown at the festival from April 20 to May 1 in Manhattan, focusing on the World Narrative and Documentary Competition film selections and the first edition of the new section--Viewpoints.
Highlights in these categories include executive producer Julia Roberts'"Jesus Henry Christ" and two Scandanavian films about female sexuality--Sweden's "She Monkeys" and Norway's "Turn Me On, Goddammit", as well as the documentary "Semper Fi: Always Faithful " on a war veteran's discovery of water contamination sites in the United States.
"We believe the competition this year is one of our most diverse yet--it includes countries and genres never before represented and highlights the spectrum of world cinema out there today," said Director of Programming David Kwok.
The 2011 film selection is composed of feature films from 32 different countries, including 43 World Premieres, seven U.S. Premieres and nine New York Premieres. Ninety-nine directors will be presenting feature works at the Festival, with 54 of these filmmakers presenting their feature directorial debuts.
In addition, the Festival will introduce new awards this year for films in competition, honoring cinematography, screenwriting and editing, providing further opportunity for those in their field to be recognized.
The Tribeca Film Festival was founded in 2001 by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff. The second half of the 2011 lineup will be revealed on March 14.
