"Tales of Two Cities," a film about fraternity and heroism, has started shooting in northwest China's Gansu Province, M1905.com reports.
Young director Pan Anzi pairs up two singers-turned-actors, pop star Richie Ren from Taiwan and mainland folk artist Teng Ge'er, as the leads. They are joined by actresses Weng Hong and Xiong Naijin.
A grand launching ceremony was held Wednesday in Dunhuang, the film's initial shooting location in Gansu Province.
The film tells the legendary story of the turbulent period of the Republic of China when grassroots outlaws and rivals Ren and Teng join forces to intercept gold from bandits and local warlords who are in collusion with invading Japanese troops.
The harsh conditions of the Gobi Desert with dust storms and sizzling heat have made filming very challenging for the actors. Ren said he must use sunscreen to prevent sunburn.
The film also will be shot at Gansu's Jiayu Pass and in Shanghai. It could be in cinemas by the end of this year.
