In an era hit by a deadly new illness, yearnings for love and an astonishing sacrifice come together on a fantastic land. Joseph, an acclaimed biologist searching for a cure on the island, is cultivating a rare medicinal plant that may hold the key to releasing the virus' grip. But when Joseph falls dangerously ill himself, his fiancée Bobo makes a pact with a mythical being to become a butterfly and live apart for three years in exchange for his recovery.
But once Joseph makes a miraculous return to health, Bobo can only look on as he isolates himself. Soon after, big-city reporter Claire journeys to the island, seeking updates on Joseph's project. A fresh relationship starts to bloom, and once more Bobo becomes anxious but neither can communicate nor intervene.
