The world-renowned Muppets were honored with the 2,466th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Tuesday, honoring their more than 50 years of entertaining the public on television and in movies.
The event, which was held in front of the historic El Capitan Theatre, coincides with the release of Disney's "The Muppets" on Blue-ray Combo Pack, DVD, Digital Download and On-Demand.
"I want to say on behalf of the Muppets that we are really happy to be here today and join some of the greatest names in show business," said the most famous Muppet, Kermit the Frog at the event.
Kermit was joined by several of his Muppet friends including Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo, Animal, Pepe, Sweetums, and Walter, the newest Muppet, who made his debut in Disney' s 2011 comedy.
Created by the late Jim Henson, the Muppets have enjoyed increasing popularity since their debut in the mid-1950s and their integration into the "Sesame Street," the Public Broadcasting Service's educational series in 1969. From 1976 through 1981, more than 120 episodes of the song-and-dance variety show "The Muppet Show" featuring a collective cast were aired. The series won four Emmys including the 1978 award for Outstanding Comedy-Variety or Music Series..
Seven films on the Muppets have been made. The latest in the series, "The Muppets," won the best original song Oscar for "Man or Muppet" during the 84th Academy Awards ceremony held late last month. The film has grossed 158 million U.S. dollars in ticket sales, representing the highest-grossing "Muppet" film to date.
Kermit had received his own star before, as have Jim Henson and Big Bird from "Sesame Street."
