The Chinese-language romantic thriller "Dangerous Liaisons" has been well received at its premiere screening here on Thursday as an official selection of the Directors' Fortnight sidebar to the ongoing 65th Cannes film festival.

All 850 seats were taken at the Theatre Croisette, while the film was given a huge round of applause by the audience at the end of the screening.

"It's very human, romantic and sincere. I was touched and I even cried when the leading actor was breaking up with the innocent woman," said Angela Bouliari from Greece.

Set in the enchanting city of Shanghai in 1930s, it has been the first Chinese film adaptation of the well-known French novel "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" by Choderlos de Laclos, upon which the 1988 film starring Glenn Close and John Malkovich was also based.

Starring in Zhang Ziyi and Cecilia Cheung from China as well as Jang Dong-Gun from South Korea, it is produced by Chen Weiming from China while directed by Hur Jin-Ho from South Korea, featuring a cruel-hearted game between a libertine and a playboy that involves another innocent woman.

In the following interactive sessions with the audience and the press, producer Chen said he was surprised and yet honored by the full attendance and positive response, adding that the film was still in post production and the version for Cannes had been edited in a hurry.

As the only Chinese film in the Directors' Fortnight session this year, it is scheduled to be screened simultaneously in China and South Korea in late September, according to Chen.
