Famous Chinese actress and most followed microblogger Yao Chen has accepted a photographer's marriage proposal when he popped the question during his birthday party, sources told Sina.com.cn.
In the afternoon of August 16, Yao wrote a message on Sina Weibo that read "Only when two are together, they can fight against life," which was aimed at her recent engagement and the hardships of life in the public eye .
Yao's friend Ning Caishen, a famous screen writer, sent her his best wishes by writing "Bless Mrs. Potato." Yao's friends nicknamed her fiancé Cao "Mr. Potato.”
Ning Caishen also credited Cao for being "innocent, kind, talented” and “having super good taste."He jokingly added "except for the fact he doesn't respect screen writers, he has no other shortcomings."
In March of last year, Yao first admitted to her relationship with photographer Cao Yu. In June of this year, rumor had it that the two had tied the knot. Yao's studio, however, denied this. But according to sources in the know, Cao proposed to Yao at a very private birthday party, to which no celebrities or staff had been invited.
Sources also said Yao started to cry and just nodded at the proposal.
Yao Chen is a very popular actress in China, starring in various films and TV series such as "My Own Swordsman." Her Weibo microblog counts over 20 million followers, earning her the nickname " Queen of the Micobloggers".
Yao was married to actor Ling Xiaosu upon her graduation from Beijing Film Academy, but the couple divorced in early 2011, unexpectedly ending their seven-year-long marriage. "We both found it hard to accept and understand each other," Yao said in an interview seven months after the breakup. "I can understand him and forgive him, but it's difficult. Sometimes, there were even feelings of hatred between the two of us," she said.
