A fine sword and scabbard of the Qing Dynasty has been sold for 48.3 million yuan (about US$7.74 million) at the China Guardian 2012 Autumn Auction in Beijing on Oct. 29. |
The auctioned treasure is one of the 90 swords and scabbards which were personally supervised by Qianlong, an emperor of Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) during the 47-year making process, said a spokesperson with China Guardian Auctions.
The 87.7-cm-long treasure was made of rare wood and jade and is an example of fine workmanship. Most of the swords and scabbards have been collected in the Palace Museum of Beijing while a few have lost overseas, said the auctioneers.
The other auctioned Qing Dynasty cultural relic – a Gold Lines Figure of Amitayus Buddha – was sold for 10.81 million yuan (about US$1.73 million) after 50 rounds of bidding. The Buddha statue had been collected by famous Chinese collector Guan Zuzhang (1894-1966).
Liu Yue, general manager of the China Guardian Auctions, said that the price of traditional cultural relics - like statues of Buddha, porcelain and jade art crafts - has far exceeded the market expectation. "We are gratified that the auction has made considerable progress, and most buyers are confident of the future art craft auction market," said Liu.
Wang Yannan, president and director of China Guardian Auctions, said: "We successfully held the first auction in Hong Kong in early October. The total turnover was HKD 455 million. It greatly boosted our confidence for the autumn auction."
The China Guardian 2012 Autumn Auction is being held at the Beijing International Hotel Conference Center from Oct. 28 to Oct. 31. It has presented more than 3,300 lots, including traditional Chinese ink and wash paintings, Chinese oil paintings, manuscripts, rare books, porcelain, artworks, furniture, sculpture, jadeite, jewelry and watches.
