A trip to the movies is reported to have been one of the more popular activites during this years lunar new year holiday, with domestic films topping box office sales.

Comedic star Stephen Chow's "Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons" smashed box office records on its box office opening, taking in 170-million yuan on February 14th, Valentine's Day.

Love comedy "Say Yes" ranked second, generating around 70 million yuan in the first three days.

Movie-goers explain why they prefer domestic films over Hollywood blockbusters during the holiday.

"You will want to do this in Chinese New Year, to watch Chinese movies, instead of more western styled films, because it gives you the vibe."

"Some Chinese style stuff, because they're funny, and we have a lot of fun, and we just laugh."

In total, nine domestic comedy films have been released over the Spring Festival.

However Hollywood blockbuster Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit" is set to hit screens next Friday.
