Hong Kong director Johnnie To's action flick "Drug War" has raked in over 100 million yuan (16 million U.S. dollars) since debuting on the mainland on April 2, according to the movie's production company.

Shot entirely in the mainland, the film follows an undercover cop, played by veteran mainland actor Sun Honglei, in his efforts to bust a huge drug ring.

According to a statement released Wednesday by the Beijing-based Hairun Pictures, the film ousted "Wind Blast" (2010) as the highest-grossing gangster film in the mainland. Box office earnings for "Wind Blast" came in at 63.4 million yuan.

"Drug War" is also To's first film to pass the 100-million-yuan mark, though his 2011 rom-com "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" came close, with 98 million yuan in ticket sales.
