"Prison Break" actor Wentworth Miller has revealed that he is gay while he refused to attend a film festival in Russia.

Russia recently passed a series of anti-gay laws which prompted Miller to turn down an invitation to the St. Petersburg International Film Festival. As a result, he has made remarks directly related to his sexual orientation for the first time.

"Thank you for your kind invitation. As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes. However, as a gay man, I must decline," Miller wrote in a reply to the director of the film festival. The letter was made public on the Website of GLAAD, or the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

Miller wrote, "I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly." But he added that "when and if circumstances improve, I'll be free to make a different choice."

Wentworth Miller, 41, rose to stardom following his lead role in the hit TV series "Prison Break". He also wrote the screenplay for the horror film "Stoker".

The bill on "propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations among minors" was signed into law by Russian President Vladimir Putin on July 29. It does not outlaw gay sex, which was legalized in Russia in 1993. Originally titled the law on "homosexual propaganda", the bill criminalizes public expression of support for nontraditional relationships. Russian lawmakers say the law merely discourages discussion of homosexuality among people younger than 18.
