The final trailer for Chinese film director Zhang Yuan's new dark drama, "Beijing Flickers," has been released today.
Zhang Yuan and actor Wang Jingchun, who won the best actor at 26th Tokyo Film Festival last month, released the trailer at a press conference in Beijing Monday.
"Beijing Flickers" is a glimpse into the lives of the youth left behind by China's booming economy. The characters search for a semblance of happiness while dealing with empty pockets, dwindling ambition and bleak prospects in the face of Beijing's increasingly glittering exterior.
Talking about inspirations of the film "Beijing Flickers," Zhang Yuan said he looked to some of his old work:
"I was actually inspired by the film 'Beijing Bastards' that I shot 17 years ago. At that time, Dou Wei, Cui Jian and I and Zang Tianshuo, Liu Xiaodong were young. But now we're no longer young. And I'm interested in the living standards of young men. Therefore I wanted to shoot the film 'Beijing Flickers.'"
Zhang Yuan was recently made a judge of the "Main Competition Section" at the upcoming Rome Film Festival. He leaves for the festival the day "Beijing Flickers" hits Chinese screens on Nov. 8.
