Wu died of a heart attack on March 4th in Beijing at the age of 75. He was famous for films like 1986 film "Old Well," which starred Zhang when he worked as an actor.
In a recent interview with Xinhua news agency, Zhang mentioned Wu's work, saying, "I feel that he is not happy. He can't make the films he would like to make. And he does not like to do things just to cater to others. He is not well-off, financially. Nowadays, things are expensive; he could be considered a 'Beipiao' (people who live and work in Beijing without having registered Beijing residence; these people often move around). Anyway, I am also one of the 'Beipiao.' He wants to do a lot of things, like build a film association, start a film academy. He's got a lot of plans he'd like to finish, but he's frustrated."
Zhang laid a wreath in his and his wife, Chen Ting's, name. Other famous film directors, including Zhang Jizhong and Li Shaohong, also attended the farewell ceremony.
