Kwok will play a martial arts master. Chen said Kwok's epitomized the roll of a person standing for justice. His demeanor and presence on set matched the roll very well.

Other casting member include Chinese actor Wang Baoqiang, Fan Wei and actress Lin Chiling from Taiwan.

The film is set in China between 1912 and 1949. It tells the story of a Taoist priest who returns to society after a life of seclusion in the mountains proved to be lonely and boring. However, a series of events leads him on a path to mastering the essence of martial arts.

"The Monk" is based on the best-selling novel Dao Shi Xia Shan ("A Monk Comes Down the Mountain") by Xu Haofeng. Xu's credits include screenwriting for Wong Kar-Wai's recent film, "The Grandmaster."

"The Monk" is scheduled for a summer 2015 release.
