Chinese Experiential Day was successfully held on 14th March.2014 at Bangor University.

The one-day event officiated by Shan Elin Williams, the teacher of PGCE, was organized by Confucius Institute at Bangor university and approximately 130 participants were all from Postgraduate certificate in education(PGCE), some of them are taking intern in the neighboring primary school. The Institute prepared elaborately for the event. Due to the participants’ professional identities, The lectures and activities focused on Chinese education system,China's geography and history, Chinese food, Chinese model lessons and Chinese calligraphy,etc,which may help in their future teaching work.
A lecture on "Chinese education system" was given by Prof. Liying Zhang. She analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of China’s current education system. She mentioned China's education is shifting from the examination-oriented to quality-oriented education, but it is very difficult to make this reformation.She cited the data two months ago (December 2013) OECD published that in mathematics scores, students from China ranks No.1 in the world, while British students in 20th . To this end,Education minister Liz Truss made a special trip to visit China and invited Chinese teacher come to the UK to show their teaching method. But Prof.Zhang argued that to got the high score does not mean its high quality of education.Students under examination-oriented education are easily to get high scores,but their creativity can easily be restricted or even denied, that’s the problem of the current education of China. At this point, the educational environment in UK with less pressure was worth learning.
Jane Love, Deputy Head Teacher of Colwyn Bay Penybryu, shared her experience in cooperation with a Chinese school in Shi Jiazhuang. She said that Chinese will be more and more popular in the world, and in the near future in Wales, people who can speak Chinese will get more job opportunity.
A lecture on China geography and history was given by David. He detailed the Chinese mountains and river systems.In order to give students a more vividly concept, he compared Chinese geographical location with the European. When introduced the history and development of China, David shared his personal experience in China and showed the photographs taken by himself in China this years.
The Chinese food culture has been partially supported by the Garden Hotel, the contents included the Chinese Table Manners, How to Use Chopsticks, Eight Major Cuisines of China, etc. The students also enjoy some Chinese food in the end of this part. Zhihui Li performed Tai Chi Fan, which is one of the most popular exercises in China. Meng Yu put on the costume of ethnic costumes and introduced different Chinese ethnic minorities. In great interest, many guests followed Yan Li to learn to speak Chinese and write Chinese character with a writing brush.
The one-day event was very successful and got a high evaluation from participants. Some of the students from PGEE said this was the first time they participate in China-themed activities, the lectures and activities gave a brief understand of China and they gained a lot of useful knowledge and skills.
