Claire Burger, one of the three directors of the opening film in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, told Xinhua Friday the female character is "appealing to us."

Burger said "we would like to be like her but we are afraid of it, that's why the character is appealing to us."

A strong and controversial character opened the Un Certain Regard section on Thursday. It's the story of Angelique in "Party Girl" by the debuting French trio: Marie Amachoukeli, Burger and Samuel Theis.

The story brings us in a world of fake, and sometimes true, happiness where a 60-year-old female protagonist still finds the breeze of life going out extensively at night like if she were still young.

The plot is inspired by the vibrant life of Angelique, in the reality the mother of Samuel Theis, a bar girl attracted by a more stable life. When she finds the occasion to marry an old miner, her instincts will play an important role on her decision.

"In a way, we just adore her, she is courageous," Burger continued. "On the other side, I think that if I would be 60 in a night club I would be sick, lose my job and everything."

"It's a question of nature," according to Theis, adding "some people belong to night life and some others belong to day life. For Angelique the problem is not to get old but it's the one of losing the job and quit the nightlife environment."

Theis clarified how they started this collaboration on the set: "We are very close friends and we know each other since almost 15, then we stated with a short film project a few years ago and finally we got into this project because we wanted to combine intimacy and work."

Asked about the success of Chinese movies in France, Burger replied that "in my country we have a lot of TV channels with a large variety of movies, then in Paris it's easy to see Chinese movies."

"I think that today Chinese cinema is growing and becoming very interesting, this year I saw two Chinese movies by a Chinese movie director living in the U.S. (Ang Lee)," she said.

While Amachoukeli stayed open about the possibility of working in China.

"We have a friend, Guillaume Gouix, who just won during the Beijing Film Festival the award for best actor in a leading role for the movie Attila Marcel. He told me, China is a great country and we should do something here because they love French," she said.
