Belgian film sales and production company Corsan announced on Monday in Cannes that Oscar prize winner Adrien Brody will play the role of Charles V in the movie "Emperor" by Lee Tamahori.
In an interview with Xinhua, Brody talked about his role in the movie. "My responsibility is to help that story and find truth in the depictions of a character that, although there are historical elements, will largely have fictional elements."
He continues: "A lot in the story will come out from imagination, but hopefully with the authenticity and conviction of how a man in that position of power would behave."
"My objective is to portrait him with enough complexity and nuances," said Brody.
Brody then explained that any work that he does entering in a character is an amalgamation of many people and elements, spending a lot of time absorbing details of human behavior.
He explained that "My mother is a photographer. She has a very similar approach to me. She finds that the unspoken message within something that would apparent is that we have to find."
Talking about his way of working on set, Brody always tries to have something truthful that he picked up along the way and which is able to come out later.
Speaking about a movie in the early stage makes him feel uncomfortable especially vis-a-vis the public, he said," For me it's very difficult to discuss here the acting process because the beauty of movies is that you sit in the room and you connect with the story and feel for the characters. "
Brody thinks that to sit, dissect and analyze the details of a film before, pulls you out of the movie because the beauty of going to the cinema is to not knowing anything about the actor playing that character.
Versatility is then a key quality for Brody, he explained, "I need the room to be an actor. I did Predators mainly to prove that the actor who can play the main character in The Pianist, can also step in the shoes of Schwarzenegger in a film like that, and do it faithfully to the original representing what the fans are looking for."
Meanwhile, director Tamahori unveiled during the interview that this is not an accurate history movie. "We know very little about Charles V as a person because he was able to suppress everything about his personal life."
"This fact allowed us to create a personality character for him which doesn't exist. Then we want to portrait the character of a pragmatic man trying to hold Europe together," said the director.
Giving details about the movie, he said, "I collapsed 35 years of European history in two years and I don't care about what historians will say about that, then I also changed the sequence of the historical events."
Contemporary Europe had an influence on the movie, the director said, "The film is inspired enormously by the current events in Europe. There is even a mention of using a common coin to unite the currencies in Europe."
Production will begin in August 2014, with filming both in the Czech Republic and Belgium.
