Stars Michael Fassbender, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Domhnall Gleeson and a slew of notable musicians were all on hand for the premiere of the off-beat, band-focused feature, "Frank," in New York city earlier this week.

Music is a key element in "Frank," which follows Gleeson's character as he joins an eccentric band led by the title character, Frank, played by Fassbender, who viewers meet as he wears a papier-mache head all of the time.

All the music and lyrics are original and actually performed by the actors.

Fassbender says he was taken with the script as soon as he read it.

"I just thought the script was really interesting. I thought it was very sort of poignant and funny and made me laugh out loud and there's some really touching moments in there as well.

The fictional story is mostly inspired by "Frank Sidebottom," the comic personal of Chris Sievey and Jon Ronson, who also co-wrote the film.

"Frank" opens in limited release on Friday August 15th.
