The first China-Singapore film production "Meeting the Giant" hit Chinese screens on Friday, trying to lure sports fans and teenagers into the cinema.
The basketball-themed movie is the directorial debut by Singapore actor Tay Ping Hui. Veteran actor Zhu Houren, the producer of the film, also starred in the film as a wealthy businessman who brought in several Chinese young basketball players to play in Singapore.
"Meeting The Giant" used only new first-timer actors and features real basketball players, some of them from the Singapore national team. The movie recounts how the Chinese players struggle to get used to their new living environment, leave their pasts behind, and build a new life for themselves in Singapore. The story, which is told through the eyes of Wu Junhui (Chua Seng Jin), a young Singaporean basketball player, is also about youth and the suspicions and acceptance of locals and foreigners.
Zhu said at the Beijing premiere that this film is based on a true story which haunted him for 10 years, so he eventually decided to make it into a film.
Singapore film companies G & J Creation and Clover Films, and Chinese film giant Stellar Mega Films Ltd., which owns one of the biggest cinema chains in China, co-produced the film.
