Heung’s wife, Duanmu Yingzi, confirmed the news yesterday. "I was mentally prepared, and I accept it. Ever since he was diagnosed, he's said to me 'I am leaving a step ahead of you. I have no regrets, so it's not a big deal, but my only worry is that no one will be there to take care of you,'" she said.
"I told him not to worry and that I would take good care of myself. He has gone to a place with no more pain, and I accept that."
Heung complained of discomfort in his throat in early May and was diagnosed with late stage esophageal cancer shortly afterwards. He refused chemotherapy and sought an alternative cure. Despite his efforts, his condition worsened in early September, and Heung was hospitalized in Beijing, reportedly in a coma.
Along with his brother, renowned film producer Charles Heung, Jimmy Heung was often hailed as one of Hong Kong's most successful showbiz minds.
The brothers are also very controversial due to their family's triad background. Heung is widely suspected to have had ties to one of Hong Kong's largest and most powerful organized crime groups, the Sun Yee On Triad. His father, Heung Chin, founded the Sun Yee On in 1919.
The Heung brothers have both denied that they have mafia connections. Jimmy Heung, who often kept a low-profile, once said, "After we made money, we did good things and never did bad things. One should ask for inner peace. My life's motto is: frown, but be calm and cool to face the criticism and pointing fingers from thousands of people, but I will ask myself to do things that will not cause me remorse and regret."
