While specifics of the deal have not been disclosed, both sides say that Tencent Video will have exclusive rights to show HBO's content in the "very near future."
HBO has a long list of renowned TV shows, including recent titles like the police drama "True Detective" and massive fantasy hit "Game of Thrones."
Tencent says that the partnership will benefit Chinese web users by providing some of the most groundbreaking shows in the world through its robust technology platform.
Online video has become a contested area between China's media giants, with the country's biggest entities snapping up copyright to acclaimed foreign content.
However, China's media watchdog is implementing tighter regulations on web video content. In their latest ruling, content providers must now obtain approval before broadcasting foreign programming online.
