Film award season has kicked off with the showbiz satire "Birdman" winning Best Feature at the annual Gotham Independent Film Awards in New York.

The "Batman" star said he was no stranger to independent film.
"I did a film called 'Game Six,' which was totally independent, beyond independent. And I've done some other ones, so I just approach the job the same way,"
Actress Julianne Moore took best actress for her performance as a woman with early onset Alzheimer's in "Still Alice." And Richard Linklater's coming-of-age tale "Boyhood" won the Gotham's Audience Award.
Oscar Isaac got a nod this year for the new crime thriller "A Most Violent Year."
The actor also confirmed his presence as an X-Wing fighter in the new "Star Wars VII" trailer, but stayed mum on any more details.
