The final chapter of Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit" trilogy became an instant cinema blockbuster in China, raking in over 300 million yuan in its opening weekend.
"The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" made 308 million yuan (US$49.4 million) in just three days during the weekend, according to China's box office tracking organization Movie Box Office.
The film made 93 million yuan (US$14.9 million) on its opening day Friday. On Saturday, its single day income surpassed the 100-million mark, totaling 117 million (US$18.78 million). Its Sunday income is estimated at 98 million (US$15.73 million).
China is the final major overseas market of "The Hobbit 3," and the box office result is the biggest opening ever for Warner Bros. International in China.
The previous two chapters of the trilogy took in 315.6 million yuan (US$50.76 million) and 463 million yuan (US$74.47 million) on the Chinese mainland respectively during their entire run. "The Hobbit 3" has clearly performed much better, and is due to make at least US$100 million in China.
Thanks to its strong debut in China, "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" ruled the international box office this weekend with US$54.3 million, most of which came from China.
So far, "The Hobbit 3" has earned US$616.9 million overseas and over US$866 million worldwide.
Director Peter Jackson, actor Richard Armitage, script co-writer Philippa Boyens, and Richard Taylor, founder of Weta Workshop came to China on Jan. 19 - 20 to attend the film's premiere and promotional activities. Peter Jackson extended his stay in China by flying around to Beijing, Shanghai and Xi'an, visiting several Chinese landmarks including the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, Yu Gardens and the Terracotta Warriors.
On the day of the film's national debut, he wrote on his official account on Chinese microblogging site Sina Weibo: "This film represents the end of a 17 year journey for myself, our cast and crew; and while this may be our last goodbye from Middle-earth, it won't be our last from China. I've enjoyed my time visiting your beautiful country and hope to visit again in the near future."
