Director Zhang Fanfan has made the revelation on his weibo account.
"Three-body problem" is being adapted from Chinese sci-fi writer Liu Cixin's trilogy of the same name.
In the trilogy, the entire solar system is flattened into two dimensions in an apocalyptic battle between humans and aliens.
Zhang Fanfan, who is known for directing mystery films, will be joined by writer Liu Cixin on the set as a consultant and executive director.
Yoozoo Pictures, the films' producer, is planning to spend 1.2 billion yuan on the trilogy.
The first installment of the series is set for release next year.
