"The selection of films looks very exceptional this year, and I'm very grateful to share this mission with such an honorable and amazing jury here," Luc Besson said while on stage with his fellow jury members. "We're all coming from different countries; we have, all of us, different sensitivities. And that's the best way for judging a film, because we are perfect examples of diversity and sensitivity."
Tiantan Awards are granted for ten categories, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Music.
With the theme of "Ode to Light and Shade," the opening ceremony respectfully praised human emotion and the ideals of supreme sincerity, supreme kindness and supreme beauty in a gorgeous and superbly creative feast of light and images. The show incorporated the icon of the Tiantan Awards, the "Flying Apsara," in a grand dance that symbolized the magnificent ideals of film and demonstrated the unique charm of the Chinese classical arts.
To give the ceremony more Beijing flavor and pay homage to Peking Opera heritage, the opening ceremony picturized a classic, traditional Peking Opera aria for the first time. Many well-known actors from various schools of Peking Opera -- including Mei Baojiu, master of the Mei School of Peking Opera -- gave unique performances of Peking Opera on the stage. Scenes from "Farewell, My Concubine," "Prosperity Brought by the Dragon and the Phoenix" and other classic operas were also made into a film.
