Xinjiang dance festival to kick off in July

An international dance festival will be held in Xinjiang in late July to enhance cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries, organizers said Thursday.

The Fourth China Xinjiang International Dance Festival will invite Xinjiang local, domestic (other Chinese provinces) and foreign acts and performing troupes from more than a dozen of countries and regions including Turkey, Ireland, Belorussia and Kazakhstan to come together to perform more than 70 shows at the festival in Urumqi and other three cities, according to the Ministry of Culture, State Council Information Office and the government of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

Tian Wen, deputy chairwoman of the Xinjiang regional government, said they hoped to organize a festival of arts and performances which can demonstrate China's style, Xinjiang's characteristics, international caliber and mass participation.

She said there will also be other activities including the China Internet Dance Festival, International Dance Master Class, 2015 Silk Road Performance Trade Fair, a cultural exchange project, an artwork exhibition and an auction.

Pu Tong, a senior official with the Chinese Ministry of Culture, said Xinjiang is in a new position and a new starting point in this new era, which will witness China's "Belt and Road" initiatives, as known as the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, take to center stage especially in Xinjiang. Pu said the colorful local culture will be one of the most important drive for the initiatives and Sino-foreign cultural exchanges.

Tian said that this year also marked the 60th anniversary of establishment of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region under China and the festival will add celebration atmosphere to the anniversary. She said the festival will integrate traditional and modern elements, including top world class performances, pop culture, modern drama and Xinjiang ethnic folk and original arts.

The Fourth China Xinjiang International Dance Festival will run from July 20 - August 5 in Xinjiang.
