American science fiction action-comedy film "Pixels" has an exclusive feature launching at its Chinese premiere on Wednesday: the audience can play a double-screen game at the theater while watching the movie.

The "double-screen game viewing" simply means that before the film starts, audience can download an app on their mobile phones. When the fighting scenes begin, the app will notify moviegoers that they can play the video game.

The scenes on their phone screens will be exactly the same as the scenes on the film screen and they can fight with classic characters such as Pac-Man and Donkey Kong in real time by using their fingers while immersing themselves deeper into the film and participating in tighter connection to the story.

The general manger of the Greater China branch of Sony Pictures Entertainment, Li Chow, said the innovative "double-screen game viewing" is exclusive for China. "Due to different preparations and theater equipment, versions of the film in other countries will not support this game mode."

The film was directed by Chris Columbus, featuring computer animated video game characters, special effects, and stars Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Josh Gad, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Monaghan, Brian Cox, Ashley Benson, and Jane Krakowski. Its screenplay was developed from French director Patrick Jean's 2010 short film of the same name.

The film's plot involves extraterrestrials misinterpreting video-feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war, and invading Earth using technology inspired by games such as Pac-Man and Space Invaders, trying to bank on the nostalgia among a generation of Chinese born in the 1980s who grew up with the old-fashioned arcade games.

"Pixels" will hit Chinese screens on Sept. 15, 2015.
