The film, directed by and starring actor-director Xu Zheng, is an installment under the "Lost in..." franchise. But rather than being a mere sequel, the Hong Kong installment has a new storyline and almost brand new cast including Zhao Wei and Bao Bei'er. The last installment "Lost in Thailand" (2012) was the former top grossing Chinese film of all time at over 1.268 billion yuan (US$208 million).

"Lost in Hong Kong" opened at midnight Friday, the beginning of the Chinese Mid-Autumn Day holiday season, and took in 10 million yuan (US$1.57 million) from more than 300,000 moviegoers undeterred by the late hour. This was a new 2D film midnight box office record.

It took in a total of 210 million yuan (US$32.94 million) on the opening day, the highest opening day and single day gross ever for a Chinese film, overtaking the recently-crowned top Chinese film "Monster Hunt." On Saturday, it went a step even further by raking in 246 million yuan (US$38.59 million), beating its own record set the day before, followed by 228 million yuan (US$35.77 million) on Sunday. In the crazy three days, it earned a total of 680 million yuan (US$106.6 million), more than a total of top five films combined in North America for the last weekend.

The other box office records it broke include the presale record, fastest to 100 million yuan and the widest release record. It is also the first film in China to gross over 200 million yuan in a consecutive three-day period.

China will soon enter the seven-day National Day holiday starting from Oct. 1, the "Golden Week," and it remains to be seen if "Lost in Hong Kong" can still be strong when it enters a fierce competition with rivals especially the fantasy adventure film "Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe" directed by Lu Chuan.
