The comedy film "Goodbye Mr. Loser" will likely be a dark horse in the fiercely competitive upcoming National Day holiday film season.

The movie, adapted from the namesake theater play, follows a middle-aged loser magically traveling back into his teenage body in 1997 when he was still in school after a weird dream induced by a hilarious drunk at the wedding of his first love.

His knowledge as an adult wins him the love of the prettiest girl in the school and popularity on the campus. By plagiarizing hit songs that gain nationwide popularity 10 years later during his adult period, he becomes a superstar in 1997 in the parallel universe.

The film is directed by Yan Fei and Peng Damo, starring comedians Shen Teng and Ma Li, who rose to fame because of Mahua FunAge theater play productions.

"Goodbye, Mr. Loser" is one of the biggest drama hits produced by Mahua FunAge, a privately owned theater play company, which shot to fame since 2003.

The movie is a solid comedy and has a large fan base thanks to the theater play's popularity. Though the coming gold week may see a clash of titans between Xu Zheng's "Lost in Hong Kong," which has already set dozens of Chinese film records, and the fantasy adventure film "Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe" by Lu Chuan, "Goodbye Mr. Loser" will probably sell well because of its quality and may benefit from the long term word-of-mouth effect, observers said.

Directors Yan Fei and Peng Damo said at the advanced screenings and the premiere held in Beijing last weekend that they expected more good reviews rather than box office revenues, "after all, this is our first time to do a movie, and we are just elementary school pupils in this industry."

The film now has accumulated a lot of good feedback from audiences and critics, as well as praises from famous TV host He Jiong, comedian Yue Yunpeng and director Ning Hao. It will debut nationwide on Sept. 30.
