In just three days, the teenage romance film "Our Times" has become the highest grossing Taiwanese film ever in the Chinese mainland, surpassing Hollywood blockbuster "Hunger Games" finale and James Bond.

"Our Times," directed by Frankie Chen, grossed 109 million yuan (US$17 million) during its opening weekend, and is the Taiwanese film industry’s biggest success to date in the mainland, beating Giddens Ko's "You Are the Apple of My Eye," which grossed US$11.98 million during its total run here.

It is the directorial debut of Chen, who previously directed popular television dramas. The film stars Vivian Sung, Darren Wang, Joe Chen and Jerry Yan. It also features a cameo of the film's investor and superstar Andy Lau. The movie is about teenagers' pure love. With its generational nostalgia elements free of political controversies and social depression, the film resonated with audiences and received rave reviews.

Taiwan's films have seldom generated stunning box office success in the Chinese mainland due to different tastes cross the Strait.

"Our Times" has been compared to the 2011 hit romance film "You Are the Apple of My Eye," which features a similar school-based romance plot line and takes places in the same time period. The film is referred to as "the female version" of “You Are the Apple of My Eye.” However, the director and cast members dismissed this comparison, with director Chen questioning "How can my youth be the same as someone else's?"

"Our Times" even beat "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2," which opened in China on Nov. 20, 2015 in China and became the top grossing film debut on Sunday.

"The Hunger Games" finale's performance in the Chinese mainland is rather lukewarm, collecting 102 million yuan (US$15.97 million) during its opening weekend. James Bond's new installment "Spectre" fell several positions on the box office chart during the weekend but its 7-day weeklong gross is at 185 million yuan (US$28.97 million) and its total gross so far in China has passed the 500 million yuan (US$78.3 million) mark -- making it the highest grossing 007 franchise episode in the Chinese market.

"Our Times" was released in Taiwan on Aug. 14, 2015 and has thus far raked in 410 million New Taiwan dollars (US$12.62 million) and is the top grossing movie in Taiwan for 2015 and one of the highest grossing Taiwanese domestic films ever.
