"Mr. Wu was a remarkable and courageous man, and he deserves to be not simply remembered but celebrated," asserted Scorsese, lavishing his praise, "As an artist, as a producer and studio chief, he was a man who stood up for his belief in freedom -- freedom of expression and greater human freedom -- in fact, I think he believed that they were one and the same, and I share that belief."
"Mr. Wu made his own extraordinary pictures, directing one of the most beautiful films called 'King of Masks'," the "Raging Bull" director added.
Wu also directed acclaimed Chinese films such as "Old Well," "River Without Buoys" and produced Huang Jianxin's "The Black Cannon Incident" and Zhang Yimou's "Red Sorghum." He is respected in China and all around the world not just because of his filmmaking but also because of his contribution to cultivate new talents, many of whom have now become stellar pillars of the Chinese film industry.
"Wu Tianming gave all of us something remarkable. As the head of the Xi'an Film Studio, he created conditions that allowed the creativities of young filmmakers to flourish and thrive," said Scorsese, "This is a man that made the fifth generation possible against overwhelming odds and powerful opposition. Tian Zhuangzhuang, Chen Kaige, and Zhang Yimou, the great filmmakers, it was Mr. Wu who nurtured and encouraged them when they started out. "
"Song of the Phoenix," with Fang Li, Zhang Yimou, Feng Xiaogang, Huang Jianxin, JiaZhangke, Han Han and many more filmmakers and actors as its free promotional advocates out of respect, will be released in Chinese theaters on May 6, 2016.
