Fifteen films from 19 countries and regions shortlisted out of 424 entries from 59 countries and regions on six continents through five rounds of selection for Tiantan Awards were highlighted at the opening ceremony. The jury will vote for winners and announce the results at the closing ceremony of the festival on April 23. Two Chinese films, "Operation Mekong" and "Mr. No Problem," are contenders.
Bille August, the award's jury president, says that there is no fixed criterion for a good film. He hoped they would avoid being bias through an open mind, "Watching a film is a pleasant experience. It can make our souls as pure as children. Whatever touches your heart is a good film."
At the opening ceremony, "This Is Not What I Expected" was introduced as the opening film of the festival. This is the first time that a debut film from a new director has been selected as the opening film. Produced by Peter Chan and Jojo Hui, directed by Derek Hui and starring Takeshi Kaneshiro, Zhou Dongyu, Sun Yizhou and Xi Mengyao, "This Is Not What I Expected" tells a fantastic love story of a man and a woman brought together by food.
