Greece's flagship Acropolis Museum welcomed a total of 1.4 million people from June 2016 to May 2017, New Acropolis Museum Director and Professor of Archaeology Dimitris Pantermalis announced during a press conference on the occasion of its 8th birthday on Tuesday.
Over 11 million Greek and international visitors have passed through its doors and enjoyed its exhibits since it first opened its doors to the public on June 20, 2009.
"Extroversion has been and remains the main feature of the Acropolis Museum policy," Pantermalis stated.
The Acropolis museum continues to enjoy international acclaim, with foreigners representing 67 percent of its total visitors.
According to the figures presented at the press conference, the number of Chinese visitors (16,369) ranks 6th among foreign visitors, after Americans (148,529), French (69,508), Italians (50,533), British (54,211) and Canadians (22,321).
"To meet our guest's needs, we had also our brochures translated into Chinese," press officer of the Acropolis Museum Danai Zaoussi told Xinhua.
Pantermalis praised during his presentation the Cooperation Agreement that the Acropolis Museum has signed with the Shanghai Museum.
"In December 2016, we visited the Shanghai Museum and began negotiations for the first exchange of exhibits and other activities to take place in the end of 2017," he stated.
For the China-Greece Cultural Exchanges and Cultural Industry Cooperation Year inaugurated in April, the two countries plan exchanges of treasures between museums and collaboration in restoration and preservation of antiquities.
To mark its 8th opening anniversary, the Acropolis museum presented on Tuesday a film about the Acropolis caves and the findings from these caves that were inhabited in prehistoric times.
While, in the evening visitors enjoyed a music concert with famous Greek songs in the Museum's entrance courtyard and free admission to the Museum exhibitions areas from 8 pm until midnight.
