Services Provided by TAC
• Conferences and forums. TAC and its committees host a series of conferences and forums in different subjet fields to members and the industry in general. These conferences and forums have become important platforms for information exchange, cooperation and strategic planning for the respective field.
• Commendations and awards. To honor and reward outstanding performance by both veteran and young professionals, TAC commends senior translators and interpreters through its committees and group members each year. It has also run the annual Han Suyin Award for Young Translators for 20 years.
• Standards and certification. TAC has worked with the nation’s standardization authorities to publish three national standards on translation and interpretation services and text quality. Certification and quality assessment based on these standards are under plan.
• Training and professional development. TAC has run a number of training sessions to provide systematic training to university teachers of translation and intepretation. TAC is also responsible for the continuing education of the CATTI certificate holders and the reregistration of their certicates.
• International communication. TAC is a member of the International Federation of Translators, and has established friendly relations with many national and international organizations and have tried in recent years to organize delegations to attend international events of interest. As one of the founder members of the "FIT Asian Translators' Forum," TAC hosted the first (1995) and the fourth (2004) sessions of the Forum.
• The Journal. The bimonthly Chinese Translators Journal, founded in 1980, is highly respected for its pursuit of academic excellence.
• The website. TAC runs a website (www.tac-online.org.cn)with both Chinese (since 2000) and English (since 2009) versions.
A brief history
June 1981 – The Translators Association of China (TAC) was established in Beijing, with 300 translators attending the inauguration
January 1983 -- The monthly bulletin of TAC Translators Journal was launched; in June 1986 the journal was renamed Chinese Translators Journal and published bimonthly.
August 1987 -- TAC sent its delegation to the XI FIT World Congress in Netherlands; during the congress, TAC became a member of the International Federation of Translators (FIT).
March 1989 -- The British-Chinese writer Han Suyin (Elizabeth Comber) donated a fund to Chinese Translators Journal, and set up the Han Suyin Award for Young Translators, which has been awarded annually. This prize is the award for translators that has been held for the longest time and with the largest number of participants in China.
July – August 1995 -- The FIT Asian Translators Forum sponsored by TAC was held in Beijing, attended by 200 plus translators from 16 Asian countries and areas. After discussion, a decision was made to set up the Preparatory Committee for the FIT Regional Center Asia. Hunag Youyi, Secretary General of TAC, was elected Chair of the preparatory committee.
February 1996 -- The delegation of TAC attended the XIV FIT World Congress. The Executive Vice President of TAC Lin Wusun was elected Council Member of FIT and Chair of the FIT Committee of Developing Countries.
July 2003 -- At the suggestion of TAC and with active involvement of TAC, the Expert Committee of China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters (CATTI) was established in Beijing, marking the beginning of the implementation of this national qualification test for translators and interpreters.
November 2003 -- The Standardization Administration of China approved and issued the national standard: Specification for Translation Service—Part 1: Translation, which was implemented as of 1 June 2004. This the first national standard on translation in China.
October 2004 -- The IV FIT Asian Translators Forum jointly sponsored by TAC and Tsinghua University was held in Beijing. About 200 participants from more than 20 countries and regions of the world attended the forum. The FIT Executive Council headed by FIT President Betty Cohen were invited to the forum.
November 2004 -- The Fifth National Council Meeting of TAC was held in Beijing. The Bylaws of TAC modified during the congress redefined TAC as a professional and trade association instead of an academic society. Since then, TAC began to open memberships to individuals, public institutions and corporations. At the same time, TAC held the Chinese Translation Achievements Exhibition in Beijing, the first exhibition of the kind since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. FIT President Betty Cohen and other Executive Council members were invited to attend the opening ceremony and the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the exhibition.
May 2005 -- During the FIT Council Meeting held in Argentina, TAC officially made the proposal to host the XVIII FIT World Congress.
August 2005 -- A delegation of 35 translators headed by TAC President Liu Xiliang and Vice President and Secretary General Huang Youyi attended the XVII FIT World Congress in Finland, and won the right to host the XVIII FIT World Congress. Huang Youyi was elected Vice President of FIT, Qiu Juliang, Vice President of TAC and Vice President of the Science and Technology Translators Association of Chinese Academy of Sciences, was reelected Council member of FIT. Eleven of the 19 papers submitted by Chinese translators to the congress were accepted.
May 2006 -- The 2006 China International Translation Industry Forum jointly sponsored by TAC and FIT was held in Shanghai, attended by nearly 300 translators from Asia, Americas, Europe and Oceania. In the closing ceremony of the forum, the FIT Secretary General Sheryl Hinkkanen and TAC President Liu Xilaing unveiled the emblem of the XVIII FIT World Congress.
April 2007 -- TAC and FIT signed an agreement which specifies, among other things, the responsibilities of each party for the XVIII FIT World Congress to be held in Shanghai on August 2-7, 2008. In June, the Organizing Committee for the Congress was set up in Beijing.
September 2007 -- China Translation Yearbook 2005-2006 (in Chinese) compiled by TAC was published by Foreign Languages Press. The Yearbook is the first annals of the development of China’s translation industry. It was decided that future yearbooks would be published every other year and will include developments in the past two years.
2 – 7 August 2008 -- The XVIII FIT World Congress was held in Shanghai, China, attended by 1,500 plus T&I Professionals and researchers on translation from 70 plus countries. With 1,510 papers submitted and 91 sessions held, the Congress was the largest FIT congress in history. TAC Vice President and Secretary General Hunag Youyi was reelected Vice President of FIT.
September 2008 -- TAC and the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad jointly held the Conference Honoring Translators and Translation Institutions in Service of the Beijing Olympic Games as a way to celebrate the International Translation Day 2008. Over 1,700 individuals and 13 institutions that had rendered translation service during the Beijing Olympic Games and Paralympics were commended.
April 2009 – The first FIT Executive Council Meeting was held in Shenzhen, China, at the invitation of TAC and the Translators Association of Shenzhen.
May – June 2009 – China International Online Forum for the Translation Industry was held with a page view of 42,720 times. It is the first time for TAC to use the online platform to run a forum.
July – August 2009, TAC introduced the Certificate in the Teaching of Translation and Interpretation at the Undergraduate Level, and run a 15-day TOT training for some 300 university teachers.
