Beijing made a substantial adjustment in taxi fares in May of 2006. Vehicle models previously charging 1.6 yuan per kilometer were allowed to charge 2.0 yuan per kilometer, a policy which eventually remained in place for seven years. The main taxi models include the Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Sonata and VW Jetta. With the surge of gas prices, taxi models such as the Xiali and Fukang gradually lost their market. Taxis now charge 2.3 yuan per kilometer with raised extra fee for waiting time, a policy installed on June 10, 2013. [File photo]
