Hainan, the Chinese tropical island, has witnessed a feverish bout of property speculation since the start of the year, largely spurred by a tourism promotion policy document issued by the central government to build Hainan into an international tourism destination.

Population: 7.87 million

Key statistics:

Hainan province built 19.93 million square meters of property in 2009, and sold 5.60 million square meters of commercial residential housing, up 32.8% and 50.5% year-on-year, respectively.
