United Parcel Services, Inc. (UPS), one of the world's largest package delivery companies, has submitted an application for a license to do express delivery business in China as it seeks to tap into the booming Chinese market.
Once the company secures a license, UPS plans to provide next-day, second-day and third-day delivery to the Chinese market, said Dan Brutto, president of UPS International.
China's new postal law requires all delivery companies to obtain a domestic license before entering the business. Two major rivals of UPS, FedEx and DHL, began express delivery operations in China before the law's adoption.
In 2004, UPS signed an agreement with its Chinese partner, Sinotrans, and took direct control of its international express operations in 23 regions in China, which extend services to more than 200 cities. But after the deal, UPS still focused on its international express delivery business in China and only signed a few long-term clients for domestic delivery services.
China's business press carried the story above on Thursday. China.org.cn has not checked the stories and does not vouch for their accuracy.
