Chalco to build JV with Malaysia's GIIG

China's leading aluminum manufacturer, Aluminum Corporation of China Ltd. (Chalco), sealed a deal with Malaysian company Gulf International Investment Group Holdings (GIIG) to jointly develop a US$1.6-billion aluminum smelting plant in Sarawak, Malaysia.

The joint venture, which will have an annual capacity of 370,000 tons, will be located in Samalaju Industrial Park, about 60 kilometers from Bintulu.

According to a Chalco insider, the JV will be established upon the restructuring of Smelter Asia, a wholly-owned subsidiary of GIIC. The plant is expected to commence operation in 2013.

The source didn't provide details on what percentage of the venture would be owned by Chalco.
