Two officials questioned over economic data leak

Two mid-level government officials have been detained by authorities in March and April in an investigation of economic data leaks, China Business News reported Wednesday, citing anonymous sources close to the matter.

The two officials are a secretary surnamed Sun from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and Wu Chaoming, a researcher at the central bank's research bureau. According to the newspaper, Wu has been earning money producing analysis reports for securities companies.

Over the past three years, data on major economic indicators including gross domestic product (GDP) and the consumer price index (CPI) have been frequently leaked to institutions before official releases.

Several people with the National Development and Research Commission (NDRC) and securities companies are also under investigation, the newspaper cited another source as saying.

China's business press carried the story above on Wednesday.
