China's electric power consumption in May rose 10.8 percent year-on-year to reach 386.5 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh), according to data released Tuesday by the National Energy Administration (NEA).

Consumption has slowed from the 11.2-percent growth in April.

In the first five months, total electricity consumption in China reached 1.8545 trillion kWh, up 12 percent year-on-year.

During the period, power consumption in the primary industry rose 4.4 percent to reach 37.2 billion kWh; power use in the secondary industry totaled 1.3907 trillion kWh, up 11.7 percent; consumption in the tertiary industry surged 15 percent to reach 197.9 billion kWh, the data showed.

Power use by residents in urban and rural areas in the first five months increased 12.3 percent year on year to reach 228.7 billion kWh.

To meet increasing power demand, the nation's electricity generating capacities have been kept running for a 30-hour extended period in the first five months compared to the same period last year, according to the NEA data.

Xu Yongsheng, head of the Electricity Department under the NEA said earlier at a press conference that with the continuous fast growth in industrial production and the use of more air conditioners in summer, electric power demand will increase, further adding pressure on supply.

Xu expected power demand will peak in July or August.
