Prada shares debut on Hong Kong market

Italian luxury brand Prada's shares began trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Friday at HK$39.5 (US$5.07) a share, the low end of its expected range, due to weak market sentiment.
Only half of the offering was subscribed by retail investors. Potential buyers were baffled by the prospect of having to pay Italian capital gains tax and dividend withholding tax, unusual for the Hong Kong market.
Julia Leung, Hong Kong undersecretary for financial services and treasury, said the bureau is in talks with the Italian firm about the tax issue. Based on previous experienced, the tax rate will be cut after negotiation, Leung said.
Prada issued a total of 423 million shares through the offering to raise about HK$16.7 billion (US$2.14 billion). Old holdings made up 86 percent of the offering, with 72 percent owned by Prada family and the remaining 28 percent owned by Italian Intesa Sanpaolo Bank. With an offering price set at HK$39.5, the Prada family and Intesa Sanpaolo were able to cash out HK$10.35 billion (US$1.32 billion)and HK$4.02 billion (US$510 million) respectively.
Goldman Sachs and CLSA acted as sponsors for the listing.
