Nestle, the world's largest food company, agreed to buy a 60 percent stake in Hsu Fu Chi International, a Chinese candy and snack maker, for $1.7 billion in a bid to boost sales in the world’s second largest economy.
Nestle offered $3.56 for each share to acquire a 43.5 percent stake of Singapore-listed Hsu Fu Chi from key shareholders. It will then seek to buy another 16.5 percent stake from the controlling Hsu family. The Hsu family now owns a 56.5 percent stake of Hsu Fu Chi.
Hsu Fu Chi's profit rose 31 percent to 602.2 million yuan ($93 million) last year as sales grew 14 percent to 4.31 billion yuan.
The Guangdong-based confectioner, with a market value of about $2.6 billion, generates all its revenue in China where it sells candies, chocolates and pastries.
